Lung failure in the era of machines: What biology and physiology is there to learn? Chair: Kenny Baillie Dr Brij Patel is Clinical Senior Lecturer in Cardiothoracic Critical Care at Imperial College London. He clinically attends in the adult critical care departments of the Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust where he leads the Trust’s critical care research programme. He is an associate editor for the Journal of the Intensive Care Society (JICS) and chairperson for the research subcommittee for the commissioned UK ECMO network for adults with severe respiratory failure. His lab examine mechanisms of cell death induced organ injury and inflammation within critical care disease states including cardiac failure, respiratory failure and ICU acquired weakness. He is also chief investigator of a number of clinical trials examining the clinical utility of physiology-based ventilation algorithms (based on a combination of artificial intelligence and decision theory) to personalise mechanical ventilation and understand cardiopulmonary physiology during mechanical ventilation. He is/has been funded by European Commission Horizon 2020, Academy of Medical Sciences (UK), the National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia, the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine and industry.
