Background

Graduated (BVSC [hons]) from the University of Liverpool 1981.  Worked for three years in the Department of Anaesthesia, The Royal Liverpool Hospital.  Awarded Certificate in Veterinary Anaesthesia (Cert VA) in 1983 and the D(iploma)VA in 1988.  Worked in the University of Virginia – Maryland, USA for 5 years as assistant professor in Veterinary Anesthesiology.  Head of anaesthesia in R(D)SVS (Edinburgh) since 1990.  Became Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia in 1996.  Member of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, the European Society of Anaesthesiology, the Animal Welfare Science, Ethics and Law Veterinary Association, Laboratory Animal Veterinary Association and the Veterinary History Society.  Editor-in-chief of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia (2000 – 2005).  Ex- President of the Association of Veterinary Anaesthetists.  Research interests: mini-pig welfare, muscle relaxants in pigs and sheep, pain in pigs and sheep; depth of anaesthesia monitoring.  Anaesthetized world’s first mammalian clone (twice).  Awarded Chair of Veterinary Anaesthesiology August 2007. Awarded The Morpheus Award 2019 (ECVAA).  Currently, I am the Academic Head of Veterinary Anaesthesia, and Clinical Director of the Wellcome Trust Critical Care Laboratory for Large Animals and Academic Head, Veterinary Anaesthesia (R[D]SVS) where, in conjunction with the BVS and Home Office Inspectorate, I assist clinicians, medical and basic scientists refine large animal models for translational research.
