11 November 2022, 13:00-14:00 The project Capturing Chronic Illness explores how photography, performance and visual culture facilitate re-imagining health, illness and non-normative bodies, paying particular attention to disability, gender, sexuality and race. This year as part of the Being Human Festival, we continue our exploration of the arts in health with an interactive discussion on graphic arts, comics and illustrations in health. This online panel discussion will explore how graphic arts, illustrations and comics give space to marginalized experiences of care and chronic illness. We invite attendees to share examples of comics and graphic novels that speak to and/or about their experiences of chronic illness. The panel will include Donna McCormack (Strathclyde), Ingrid Young (Edinburgh), along with special guests. This event launches Capturing Chronic Illness’s new zine – Bloody Chronix – produced in collaboration with the research project Transplant Imaginaries, artist Lynne Zakhour (@lynne.on.paper) and designer Richard Kahwagi (@rkahwagi). We will have a limited number of printed copies of the zine that will be available to attendees.
