'Can Robots Care?': Giulia De Togni at the Cabaret of Dangerous Ideas 2021 Giulia De Togni, a Research Fellow at CBSS, will be speaking at the Cabaret of Dangerous Ideas 2021. This is an annual event run at The Stand Comedy Club in New Town as part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. At CODI, top academics discuss interesting (and possibly contentious) research with a fun and comedic twist in their delivery. Giulia will be speaking on the topic 'Can Robots Care?'. This is based on her research she has been working on at CBSS since May 2019 on the Wellcome Trust Seed Award ‘AI and Health’. It also draws on her academic specialism in Japanese Studies and her research interests in risk, technology, health, and human rights. Her routine will be asking the question: would let a robot look after your loved ones? In light of a rapidly ageing population and a shortage of human carers, robot carers are becoming an increasingly realistic option - especially in Japan (where Giulia has previously researched). This is the second year Giulia has spoken at CODI. Last year, she spoke on the topic 'When Did You Last Have Sex?', a lighthearted look at the issues of data privacy surrounding health and wellbeing apps. After delivering her previous routine completely online last year, Giulia is excited that there will be a small, in-person audience at The Stand this year. There will be a limited number of in-person tickets available so be sure to book quickly! There will also be a livestream and CBSS will be posting a video of the routine afterwards. The event will be hosted by comedian Susan Morrison. Dr Chris Elsden (The University of Edinburgh) and Dr Mabel Victoria (Edinburgh Napier University) will also be speaking in the same slot. Chris will be asking if money is getting smarter, and Mabel will discussing toilet grafitti. It promises to be an interesting event and we wish Giulia lots of luck - break a leg!
