Usher Institute Inaugural Showcase The College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine welcomes you to an inaugural lecture showcase event. Join two professors from the Usher Institute as they reflect on the successes in their transdisciplinary academic careers, share powerful lessons learned through failure, and offer insights into the future of innovation in complex systems.Julie Jacko | Professor of Health Informatics and Data ScienceSteven Yule | Professor of Behavioural Sciences Professor Julie Jacko | Reimagining Health and Social Care Systems: When Human-Centred Isn’t Enough Professor Julie Jacko is Chair of Health Informatics and Data Science at the University of Edinburgh, Chief Academic Officer of the Usher Institute, and Dean of Innovation and Engagement for the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. A visionary leader in systems engineering, human-computer interaction, and digital health, Julie harnesses the power of intelligent technologies and human-centred design to transform healthcare delivery, strengthen population health, and advance equity on a global scale. Her research—supported by leading government agencies, industry partners, and philanthropic foundations—has shaped national digital health strategies, driven innovation in clinical systems, and improved outcomes for underserved communities. As principal investigator, Julie has led high-impact initiatives that apply engineering principles and human factors to solve complex challenges across health IT and care infrastructure.Julie received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the highest honour awarded by the U.S. government to emerging research leaders and continues to be recognised internationally for her pioneering contributions to the field. She serves on the Scottish Science Advisory Council, contributing to science policy and innovation strategy, and continues to mentor emerging leaders in digital health, shaping education and practice on a global scale. As Dean of Innovation and Engagement, Julie leads strategic efforts to bridge academia, industry, and government, translating scientific discovery into scalable solutions that improve lives, empower communities, and build a more equitable future. Professor Steven Yule | The Future Ain’t What It Used to Be Professor Steven Yule is Chair of Behavioural Sciences at the University of Edinburgh where he leads cutting-edge research using AI, video, and sensor technologies to optimize surgical performance, enhance team dynamics, and improve patient safety in the digital operating room.Steven is the lead scientist of the Surgical Sabermetrics Laboratory (SaberLab), a pioneering research group that translates data-driven analytics and performance-enhancing techniques from elite sports to enhance surgical team effectiveness. An internationally recognized expert in non-technical skills and human performance, Professor Yule has studied high-stakes teamwork in surgery, spaceflight, and sport for over 25 years. He also directs the MSc in Patient Safety and Clinical Human Factors at University of Edinburgh; an innovative programme that trains healthcare leaders worldwide in systems thinking, non-technical skills, and digital health innovation to advance safer, higher-quality care.Through multidisciplinary collaboration, Steve’s mission is to translate scientific innovation into real world solutions that transform healthcare delivery, improve lives, and benefit society.
