Topic
Enabling public, provider and policy maker access to real-world health data to improve healthcare and advance health equity: an example from the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES)
Speaker

Michael Schull, Chief Executive Officer at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES), Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto, and Senior Scientist at the Sunnybrook Research Institute
Michael's research focuses on health service utilisation, quality of care, health system integration and patient outcomes, and the evaluation of health policy. Much of his work is focused on strengthening Ontario and Canada's health research infrastructure for the analysis of large, routinely collected datasets, and ensuring these data can be used for research and to support health system evaluation and decision-making. He is a co-PI in Health Data Research Network Canada (HDRN), a pan-Canadian network of health data and research centers seeking to facilitate and enable pan-Canadian research. He is also past co-Director of the International Population Data Linkage Network.
Under his leadership, ICES has expanded the types of data available for researchers, created a virtual data platform where researchers can access and analyse linked datasets, launched a health artificial intelligence data and analysis platform, and engaged the public in the work of ICES to ensure it remains aligned with public values. He practices as an Emergency Medicine specialist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.
