PGR VOICES: Intentions

Eleanor Dixon celebrates a small but meaningful PhD milestone: submitting her intention to submit.

by Eleanor Dixon | PhD student

A small yet meaningful milestone has occurred in my PhD journey - I have sent off my “intention to submit”.

For those who do not know, approximately two months before you hope to submit your thesis, you must tell the Exams Office that this is the case. Although the reality of submitting these documents does not mean very much, for me, it held some significance. A little milestone to celebrate. A step closer to, hopefully, my thesis no longer entering my dreams whilst I try to sleep. Perhaps even a glimmer of hope that I may have a restful summer.

Either way, I have learned to be intentional during this PhD journey. That is, celebrate every step of the journey, enjoy the highs whilst they last as you will need these to hold on to during the lows - and surround yourself with flowers to brighten up the grey days.
