Bruce Guthrie and Susan Shenkin are co-investigators on a new NIHR funded study of COVID prophylaxis in care homes. The study will test one or more treatments in care homes with the aim of reducing the risk of residents catching the virus that causes COVID-19 and of developing severe disease. The results of the study will be rapidly available to ensure that treatments can be introduced without delay and COVID-19 guidelines quickly updated. It exists to facilitate collaboration between senior academics in primary care and key stakeholders involved in the development and implementation of integrated health and social care service policy. Since its inception in 2000, the SSPC has been responsible for high quality research and for bringing new research funding into Scottish universities. Current members include the Universities of Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee, Glasgow, Highlands & Islands, Stirling, Strathclyde, St Andrews and Robert Gordon University. Stewart Mercer has been the Director of the Scottish School of Primary Care since 2014. This research will develop and test a new system (intervention) to lower the blood pressure of stroke survivors and those who have had Transient Ischaemic Attacks (TIAs). The intervention is based around stroke/TIA survivors (or their carers) measuring and managing their blood pressure at home, with input from a GP or specialist when needed.
