Academy visited by American researcher

At the end of March, Professor Duke Han, PI of the Han Research Lab at the University of Southern California spoke to the ACRC Academy.

Introduced to us by the team at Lothian Birth Cohorts, we were able to host Professor Han on the 27th March at the Usher Building.

Professor Han is an expert in clinical neurology, and spoke passionately about his research; particularly that around financial mismanagement and dementia. With $28bn fraudulently stolen from older adults, this was clearly an area of importance.

During his talk “Financial Decision Making in Older Age: Neuropsychology, Neuroimaging, and Public Policy Considerations,” he spoke generally about the importance of context and  of scientific research in general as he shared findings from his research lab. With a multidisciplinary audience, Professor Han deftly spoke about the importance of interdisciplinary work, and how not understanding how something works is part of collaboration.

The talk was attended by ACRC staff, Academy students and members of the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences. In an open question and answer, he replied at length on a variety of topics, and was happy to answer questions informally after the presentation section was over. Students found it helpful to hear not only about research findings, but learn more about what happens behind the scenes when doing interdisciplinary research across multiple expertise.

It was a pleasure to host such an affable and knowledgeable presenter and we are grateful to Professor Han for being so generous with his time.
