Ageing Well in Place: Shaping Care Technology for Older Adults to Stay Independent at Home

Ageing Well in Place is a study project aiming to develop and improve technologies that can support older adults in living safely and independently in their own homes.

As people age, they may experience physical limitations that can make daily tasks more challenging. Technology for ageing in place offers a win-win situation for older adults, families, and society as a whole. By promoting independence, safety and well-being, it allows older adults to lead fulfilling lives in their own homes for as long as possible.

In this study, we will be using small, unobtrusive sensors placed strategically throughout your home to collect information about your daily activities. These will include motion-capturing cameras, magnetic door sensors, and radiofrequency devices that capture different actions in your daily routines and habits. For example, opening a door or sitting on a sofa, etc.

Call for Participants - we need your support!

Are you 60 or older and interested in shaping the future of ageing at home?

We are recruiting volunteers to participate in a research study that explores how new technology can empower older adults to live safely and independently in their own homes. The study will involve using electronic devices to collect behavioural and physiological data about your daily activities. This data will be used to develop and improve technologies that can support independent living for older adults.

Participation will involve:

  • A short meeting to discuss your daily routine and preferences.
  • Consenting and allowing researchers to install unobtrusive sensors in your home.
  • Consenting and allowing sensors to passively collect data about your activities and vital signs without requiring any action from you.
  • Keeping an activity logbook.

Your privacy will be strictly protected throughout the whole study. There will be no collection of personal data, videos, images or conversations using any of our installed devices. You can choose the type of sensors you are comfortable with during our meeting and request the removal of some or all the devices at any point during the study. The devices will be setup to ensure they do not affect your activities in any way. Your participation is entirely voluntary, and you can leave the study at any time.

Your participation will be invaluable in helping us:

  • Develop new technologies that can make it easier and safer for older adults to live at home.
  • Gain a better understanding of the needs and challenges faced by older adults living independently.
