Academy student wins opthalmology medal

A member of the 2022 Academy cohort has won a coveted award.

Godfrey Wanok, a member of the 2022 Academy student cohort has won the Sir. David Brewster Medal in Primary Care Opthalmology for academic year 2021-22. He was awarded the medal on the 11th November, during the Diploma Ceremony of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

The award is given to the top performing student of the MSc. Primary Care Ophthalmology (online learning) at the University of Edinburgh.

He gave us his thoughts on winning this prestigious medal:

"I was honoured to receive the Sir. David Brewster Medal during the ceremony. As an Optometrist, this means a lot to the eye care profession, especially in Uganda. The MSc was a wonderful opportunity for me to improve my clinical diagnostic skills in optometry & vision science and strengthened my knowledge in scientific research. These can all be used to strengthen eye care service provision as more emphasis is currently put on evidence-based practice.

"I would like to thank The University of Edinburgh MSc. Primary Care Ophthalmology administration especially the Programme director Prof. Baljean Dhillon and Deputy Programme Director Dr. Ellis Heather for such a great online academic programme which can be done amidst remarkably busy schedules of work and family commitments. I would also like to take a moment to appreciate the optometrists in Uganda who volunteered to participate in my final year research project titled: 'Knowledge, experience and management of keratoconus by optometrists in Uganda'."
