Dr Kieran Sweeney is a GP in Tranent and Academic Fellow in General Practice at the University of Edinburgh.

Last weekend, he was awarded the ‘Allen and Margaret Wilson Award’ from the RCGP South East Scotland Faculty. This is awarded biennially to a GP to recognise and congratulate their work in research, with a prize of £750.

The award is funded by the Allen and Margaret Wilson Memorial Fund, established from public donations following the tragic death of these Innerleithen doctors over 40 years ago in a road accident on the A1. Rev Fraser Edwards, Minister of Innerleithen Parish, is the chairperson of the memorial fund.

Dr Sweeney attended the Kirkin’ Service at Innerleithen Parish this Sunday 9th July to be presented with the award and said

“I was absolutely delighted to receive this award. This research was only possibly thanks to the support of colleagues at the Advanced Care Research Centre and my supervisors Professor Mercer and Dr Donaghy.

"It was an honour to be presented with the award at Innerleithen Parish, where the warmth of the community that established the award over 40 years ago is still so evident.”

Kieran is researching  primary care transformation in Scotland. He conducted a study evaluating patients’ experiences of general practice in Scotland, with a focus on how recent changes to services are affecting ageing patients with multimorbidity and those living in deprived areas.

He is supervised by Dr Eddie Donaghy and Professor Stewart Mercer, Deputy Director of the ACRC.
