The EAS was established to examine the frequency and risk factors for symptomatic and asymptomatic peripheral arterial disease in the general population. More information The EAS began in 1987 as a cross sectional survey of 1592 randomly selected men and women aged 55 to 74 years, from 11 general practices spread throughout the city of Edinburgh, Scotland. Subjects were followed for 20 years, with comprehensive clinical examinations for vascular disease and a wide range of vascular risk factors at baseline, 5 year and 12 years follow-up, cognitive testing on two occasions 4 years apart, and DNA extraction at 5 years (with subsequent genotyping using CardioMetabochip). The EAS has resulted in a large number of publications on peripheral arterial disease, cognition and other chronic diseases, contributes to a wide range of collaborations on the molecular epidemiology of vascular disease.
