General entry requirements

We seek candidates who have (or who expect to be awarded) at least a 2:1 honours degree or its international equivalent in a relevant subject. Candidates with a 2:2 honours degree (or equivalent) and sufficient relevant work experience at a suitable level may be considered.

In your personal statement you must effectively demonstrate your interest in research to address the societal challenge of care for those in later life.

Project-specific entry requirements

You must apply to a single project: links to the full range of project descriptions is available on the Academy website and on FindaPhD. Each project contains project-specific eligibility criteria.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to discuss the project/s of most interest with a supervisor prior to submitting their application.

International student entry requirements

Details of our English-language requirements are on the University of Edinburgh’s degree finder. Applications may be submitted with proof of English language proficiency included or to follow later. In the latter case an offer will be conditional upon proof of English language proficiency as defined on the degree finder. The offer will be valid for a maximum of 28 days where proof of English language is required.  

If proof of English language proficiency is received within that time the offer will convert to unconditional. Otherwise the offer will be immediately and permanently withdrawn.

How to Apply

What you need to do

1. Apply to PhD with Integrated Study in Advanced Care via the University of Edinburgh’s degree finder.

2. Supporting documents

Please upload a CV to any of the upload fields. This should be written in a mainstream font (such as Arial or Calibri), font size 11, 4 pages maximum length (A4 or US letter), saved in pdf format using the following filename format “Family name First name CV.pdf”  

You must upload a transcript and certificate for your degree, including final classification. If you have more than one degree you must do this for each of your degrees.

If you have not yet completed your degree please upload an interim transcript.

All transcripts and certificates should be provided in English, with official translation if necessary.

3. References

When you submit your application, the University will email each of your referees and advise them how to upload your references. These must be signed and on letter-headed paper. It is your responsibility to ensure that your referees upload their reference no less than two weeks after the closing date. References from gmail and other private email accounts are not accepted – they must be from the referees’s institutional email account.

4. Research Proposal 

Please select one project from the list and copy the title to the research proposal title field. As you are applying to a pre-existing project you should not upload your own research proposal. We are unable to remove the upload request, but you should ignore it and submit without it.

You may apply only once, and additional applications will be rejected.

5. Funding

There is no separate application for funding. All successful applicants will be funded. Please leave all funding questions blank.

Student recruitment fees and stipend

The ACRC Academy Programme has funding for an intake of twelve students in 2024.

Funding is available to applicants from the UK, EU and the rest of the world. However, a maximum of 3 funded places per annum will be awarded to international students (non-UK).

For both international and home successful applicants the funding package covers fees, enhanced stipend, plus a modest budget for consumables and project-related travel.

The 2023/4 stipend is £19,684 and increases annually, 2024/5 rate is yet to be confirmed.
