Chase is a Lecturer in Social Science and Medicine at Usher Institute. His research explores the sociology and history of HIV/STI prevention and innovation, critical and queer public health, and the sociology of health activism.

His previous research has explored:

Chase was previously an Interdisciplinary Research Fellow as part of CBSS's Beyond Engagement theme. His current work explores the sociology of DoxyPEP in the UK, queer approaches to evidence-based medicine, and the role of social imaginaries as methodologies for public health research. Chase is an editorial board member for Psychology & Sexuality. He runs regular community workshops in Edinburgh and Glasgow on sexual and queer activism, advocacy, and health education.

Research

  • Sexual Health Futures in Scotland (external site) - Wellcome-funded postdoctoral research exploring the role of social imaginaries in shaping community understanding(s) of sexual health, wellbeing, and engagement in Scotland. 

  • HIV Activists BBSRC and UK-International Coronavirus Network (UK-ICN) funded research exploring changes in HIV activism during the early COVID-19 crisis in England, UK.        

  • Getting to ZeroGlasgow Medical Humanities Network and Wellcome Trust funded small grant project examining how HIV health promotion in Scotland, UK, has progressed towards ‘ending AIDS’ in the 2010s.        

  • HIV in Scotland – a digital exhibition exploring the histories of HIV/AIDS health promotion in Scotland since the 1980s.    

  • Post-AIDS Imaginaries (external site) – Chase's PhD research explored the role of 'post-AIDS' discourses and imagery in the construction of public health campaigns and cultural media focused on ending new HIV transmissions in the UK, US, and France.
