Capacity building and training

NESSIE is very motivated to develop capacity for high-quality evidence synthesis. We do this in the following ways:

  • NESSIE co-investigators and staff contribute to the Masters of Public Health systematic review modules at the University of Edinburgh
  • NESSIE co-investigators and staff contribute to the Masters of Public Health systematic review modules at Glasgow Caledonian University
  • NESSIE staff held internal NESSIE workshops on citation and reference management software
  • We support postgraduate students at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Stirling to be involved in NESSIE reviews as part of their degree placements.
    • During 2025-26, NESSIE members supported four Masters students in this way. Three MSc students on the Masters in Health Research (online) programme from University of Stirling have joined the chronic non-cancer pain in children project to learn about qualitative evidence synthesis and contribute to the review with tasks such as study selection. A student on the MSc in Data Science in Health and Social Care from University of Edinburgh developed audience-specific visuals to enhance the impact and usability of the results from the Exercise for secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases project.
    • During 2023-2024, NESSIE members supported a Masters in Health Research student from the University of Stirling on the Treatment order reviews and six interns on the Exercise for secondary prevention review.
