An event was held to celebrate the career of the late Professor Alastair Spence CBE who was Head of Department and Chair of Anaesthesia 1984-1998. In association with the Edinburgh and East of Scotland Association of Anaesthetists and the department of Anaesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine a programme of talks was organised to celebrate the contribution to Anaesthesia by Professor Alastair A Spence CBE. In the morning session of the programme his colleagues presented a series of talks celebrating his career and contribution to Anaesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine including his role as President of the Royal College of Anaesthetists. The afternoon session was devoted to "visions of the future" presentations. The event included the unveiling of a series of portraits of the past Chairs of Anaesthesia at the University of Edinburgh who are James Donald Robertson Donald Bruce Scott Alastair A Spence Gordon B Drummond (retired) Ian Power (retired) Image Image The event was attended by members of Prof Spence's family, friends and colleagues with whom he had worked with over the years.
