Allocative Efficiency in End of Life Care

Achieving a more cost-effective mix of services within health and social care services to maximise the health of the UK

The main aim of this project is to inform a more efficient allocation of health and social care resources in the provision of end of life care. Using linked patient-level datasets from Scotland (in parallel with colleagues at Imperial College London accessing similar datasets from England) the project will assess the trajectories of health and social care services use and costs in the last year of life. This will inform a microsimulation model aimed at assessing the potential for allocative efficiency in the last year of life across the two countries. Qualitative work will also be conducted to assess potential barriers at the patient and system level for a more efficient use of resources in this area.
