Professor Fernando MartinezChairDr Fernando D. Martinez is a Regents’ Professor and Director of the Asthma & Airway Disease Research Center at the University of Arizona in Tucson.His primary research interests are the natural history, genetics, and treatment of childhood asthma; his work has impacted the development of the concept of the early origins of asthma and COPD. In addition, Dr Martinez has contributed to understanding of the role of gene-environment interactions in the development of asthma and allergies. He has been the principal investigator of a Clinical Center that is part of the NHLBI Asthma Treatment Networks.Dr Martinez serves on the National Scientific Council on the Developing Child, and was a member of the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program that was responsible for the development of the Expert Panel Report: Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma in 1997 and its first revision in 2001. He is also the Interim Medical Director of the Research Institute at Children’s Hospital Colorado.Professor Szefler’s major contributions are directed toward the individualized use of asthma therapy. He is currently the Co-Principal Investigator for the Denver site of the NHLBI PrecISE Network that is evaluating precision medicine for severe and exacerbation-prone asthma. She has established an international reputation for mixed methods applied health research, particularly in improving the organisation and delivery of services. The funding for her research has come from a variety of competitive sources including the EU’s FP7 Programme, National Institute for Health Research, Economic & Social Research Council, Medical Research Council, and Canadian Institutes for Health Research. Jo has accumulated a body of research that resulted in her being named by Thomson Reuters as a highly cited global researcher.
