Poly-unsaturated fats for improving nasal polyps and asthma (PUFFIN) The efficacy and mechanisms of action of N-3 poly-unsaturated fatty acid supplementation in people with non-steroidal exacerbated airways disease and uncontrolled asthma.Project overviewThe project aims to work out if patients who have a particular type of asthma (non-steroidal exacerbated airways disease (N-ERD) and symptomatic asthma) will have greater improvement in controlling their asthma (measured by the ACQ-6 test) 24 weeks after starting the study when treated with omega-3 fatty acids (n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA)) compared to participants treated with placebo. The study is an interventional clinical trial of an investigational medicinal product (drug). It is a phase III, randomised, placebo-controlled, two arm, double-blind, multicentre clinical trial in 98 participants with non-steroidal exacerbated airways disease (N-ERD) and asthma.Outcomes will be assessed primarily measuring the change in asthma control using the ACQ-6 test between baseline and 24 weeks post-randomisation. A subgroup of 52 participants (26 per group) will be recruited into the sub-study looking to test markers of inflammation and how they change from the beginning to the end of the study.Key People Andrew WilsonClinical Senior Lecturer in Respiratory Health Professor of NutrigeneticBased at: University of East AngliaAndrew's profile Anne-Marie Minihane Clinical Trials Unit Director Based at: University of East Anglia Ann Marie's Profile Allan Clark Medical Statistician Based at: University of East Anglia Allan's Profile Anne-Marie Minihane Professor of Nutrigenetic Based at: University of East Anglia Anne-Marie's Profile Glenis Scadding Consultant Physician Based at: Royal National Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital Glenis' Profile Peter Howarth Professor of Allergy and Respiratory Medicine Based at: University of Southampton Peter's Profile Shuaib Nasser Consultant Physician Based at: Addenbrooke's Hospital Philip Calder Professor of Nutritional Immunology Based at: University of Southampton Philip's Profile Juliet High Senior Trial Manager Based at: University of East Anglia Juliet's Profile Colin McAlister Trial Manager Based at: University of East Anglia TimelineApril 2021 - April 2024Contact usWant to know more?
