Highlights of the Annual Scientific Meeting 2018 (23-24 January, Bristol)

A huge thank you to all of our members and guests who contributed to another successful Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research Annual Scientific Meeting!

Held in the Bristol 'M Shed' museum on 23-24 January, the meeting reflected on the impact of the Centre to date, exploring future opportunities for greater impact for those affected by asthma through connections with patients, NHS guidelines and policies, NHS clinical practice, and academia.

Thank you to our speakers

Guest speakers included Dr Simon Barry - Respiratory Health Implementation Group Lead, NHS Wales - who delivered an insightful presentation on influencing policy for asthma care. Professor Mike Roberts also shared his respiratory care expertise, presenting on the implementation of asthma research into clinical practice through partnership with CLAHRCs. Professor Roberts is an NHS Consultant Respiratory Physician, Deputy Director of North Thames CLAHRC, Clinical Director of the National Asthma and COPD Audit Programmes and Clinical Academic Lead for Population Health for UCLParters Academic Health Science Network.

The two day meeting also included a session dedicated to methodology which focused on using cohorts in research. Many thanks to all of our guest methodologists who shared their expertise: Dr Rebecca Richmond (University of Bristol), Andrew Boyd (University of Bristol) and Dr Lucy Pembrey (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine).

Finally, thanks go to our excellent Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) group and PhD students, who each led a session addressing a wide range of topics within asthma research. Talks in these sessions highlighted patient and PPI perspectives and explored research on mobile self-management apps, socioeconomic inequalities in asthma care, asthma and exercise, financial incentives for medication and more.

Congratulations to our prize-winning students!

  • Marissa Mes was awarded Best Poster Presentation Award for her poster 'Perspectives of adults with asthma on pharmacist-led adherence support in general practice'.
  • Dr Luke Daines was awarded Best Oral Presentation Award for his talk 'Estimating the accuracy of diagnostic tests for asthma'.
  • Tracy Jackson received 1st prize for PPI Excellence in Research whilst Ann McMurray was awarded 2nd prize - this award acknowledges the exemplary PPI involvement Tracy and Ann have achieved in their research.
