The MRC have allocated funds to support additional research, training and development costs. These funds can be used flexibly to support:

  • high cost training in recognised areas of strategic need such as quantitative, interdisciplinary or in vivo skills; funding will not, in general, be available simply to top up consumables for animal or omic studies, unless the training value is clear.
  • exceptional training opportunities such as overseas fieldwork, time ‘out of a programme’ to complete a complementary and beneficial placement, or training in new advanced research skills;
  • opportunities to provide training with industry or at the interdisciplinary interface;
  • transitions from PhD to first post-doc positions to increase the competitiveness of outstanding candidates.

Who can benefit from a flexible supplement award?

This is a supplement targeted to the entire DTP and all MRC-funded students registered at the DTP University, which would include:

  • Core DTP students

  • MRC industrial CASE students

  • National Productivity Investment Fund studentships

  • MRC Unit, Institute, Centre or Partnership students

  • MRC Clinical Research Training Fellows

The funds are limited and will be awarded competitively, up to a maximum of £5,000. There are set calls for applications each year; the current deadline to receive new applications is TBC. For time sensitive requests we can occasionally accept ad-hoc applications. To apply for funds from the Flexible Supplement, the following form should be submitted.

Each request will be reviewed by the Programme Director and Grant Holder.

Glasgow lead students as part of the Precision Medicine DTP should contact the University of Glasgow and use their processes and procedures to apply.
