Innovation in digitally enabled clinical trials webinar Join us on Monday 28 September to hear a range of speakers from academia, industry and the charity sector discuss their experience in clinical trials, and the challenges and opportunities ahead. Big data and new technologies have long promised to improve the efficiency, speed and patient experience of clinical trials. How can we use data to improve (remote) patient recruitment, trial design and costs, and to harness the predictive power of future trials? Find out how partnerships, in particular with academia, can help the commercial and charity sectors realise the potential of digitally enabled clinical trials. How has the Covid-19 pandemic accelerated change and shown us what is possible? Professor John Norrie, Director of the Edinburgh Clinical Trials Unit, will chair the event, and he will be joined by: Dr Dave Leather, Global Medical Vice President, GSK Respiratory Therapy, who will be talking about ‘the Salford Lung Study: hiccups and hurdles’. Dave is the leader of GSK’s Global Medical Affairs team for inhaled asthma medications. He has a leadership role in “real world pragmatic trials” and is the leader of the internationally recognised Salford Lung Study. Professor Aziz Sheikh, Director, Usher Institute and Dean of Data, University of Edinburgh, who will be talking about ‘Digitally-enabled trials: challenges and opportunities’. Aziz has worked with numerous governments, the WHO and World Bank on projects to transform the delivery of health care and improve population health using health IT and data science. He leads BREATHE – The Health Data Research Hub for Respiratory Health and is a member of the Scottish Government’s COVID-19 CMO Advisory Group and the UKRI COVID-19 College of Experts. Kay Boycott, Chief Executive, Asthma UK and British Lung Foundation Partnership, who will be talking about the use of data to support clinical improvements for patients. Kay Boycott has a wealth of cross-sector experience in both executive and non-executive roles. In her current post, she has led digital transformation, cross sector partnerships in research and innovation and in 2019 a merger with the British Lung Foundation. Professor Nicholas Mills, Chair of Cardiology and Data Driven Innovation Lead (Health & Social Care), University of Edinburgh, who will be talking about data trials using DataLoch. Nick Mills is the principal investigator of a multi-centred cluster randomised trial evaluating the impact of a high sensitive troponin I assay on patients with suspected acute coronary syndrome (High-STEACS). Professor Matt Sydes, Clinical Trials and Methodology, MRC Clinical Trials Unit at UCL, who will be talking about ‘moving forward: data-enabled trials in the UK’. Matt commonly advises on trial design and conduct of external trials. He has a particular interest in the use of routinely-collected electronic health records (EHR), adaptive and efficient designs for late-phase trials, and clinical trial data sharing. The webinar will include an opportunity for Q&A with speakers.
