The Forensic Medicine & Science Course is an introductory 32 week night class which aims to explore the basic elements of medicine, science and law as applied to the investigation of death and crime and its application to the court law. A non-exhaustive list of the topics covered; Post Mortem Changes Fingerprinting Cybercrime Sudden Natural Death Biological Evidence Forensic Entomology Wounds & Trauma Fire Investigation Forensic Archaeology & Anthropology Autopsy DNA and its Forensic Analysis Forensic Odontology Asphyxia Toxicology Wildlife Investigation Sexual Offences Scene of Crime Forensic Psychiatry The role of the Procurator Fiscal and Forensic Pathologist Teaching and course work Material to support the lectures will be provided. Assessment comprises of three pieces of written work and an examination. The assessment is optional. The course does not provide a qualification however students who successfully complete the assessed work will receive a Certificate of Completion. The lecturers are from academic and professional organisations and have extensive experience gained from investigating many real-life cases. The course runs from October to the beginning of June. Course aims At the completion of this course, participants should possess: A basic knowledge of medical, scientific and legal concepts in forensics and an understanding of techniques and methods used. An understanding of the multidisciplinary nature of forensic investigation. An understanding of the basic organisational structures involved in the practice of forensic medicine and science.
