Funded studentships

Funded studentships are, from time to time, available for full-time PhD study.  These are typically awarded by competition. Funded studentships are usually advertised in relation to specific projects. However, there will often remain some flexibility with regard to the finer detail of the PhD research project to be undertaken, as long as it remains within the general specified area.

Please note:

• unfunded studentships/projects are sometimes also advertised.
• funded studentships often pay only UK/EU fees. Provided the specific rules of the studentship allow awards to non-UK students, an overseas student applying for a studentship would need to be able to pay the difference in fees between the studentship award and the overseas fee rate.

Relevant scholarships

Scholarships which may be available to students wishing to undertake postgraduate study at the Usher Institute include:

• Beit Trust - available to students from Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe
• China Scholarships Council - available to students from China
• Colciencias Scholarship - available to students from Colombia
• Conacyt - available to students from Mexico
• Mary Orr Paterson Scholarship - available to students from Czech Republic, Poland, Russia and Slovakia
• NMAHP Research Futures - supports Nursing, Midwifery and allied health professionals wishing to pursue masters or doctoral research training

Please note that this is not an exhaustive list and there may be other schemes relevant to some students. In addition to these funding opportunities, we sometimes have overseas PhD students who have been successful in applying for scholarships/funding from their home country, and we would encourage such students to get in touch with us to discuss project possibilities.

Other sources of funding

UK funding bodies which support PhD studentships include research councils, charities and other organisations. Examples of some of these are:

• British Heart Foundation
• Chief Scientist Office
• Diabetes UK
• Economic and Social Research Council
• Medical Research Council
• Wellcome Trust 

Again, this is not an exhaustive list and students may find other sources of funding relevant to their particular area of research interest.
