Research

World-leading research across population health, global health, medical informatics, biomedicine, self and society and clinical trials.

Our research builds on the outstanding heritage of public health, general practice, epidemiology and statistical research at the University of Edinburgh. We are forging new connections between social science, informatics and data science to advance understanding of disease and improve health and care for patients and populations.

Involving members of the public to help shape our work is very important to us - if you are keen to get involved to help feed in to our work or indeed as a study participant you can find details below.

Our Centres

The Usher Institute includes the Centres for Population Health Sciences, Medical Informatics, Global Health, Biomedicine, Self and Society and the Edinburgh Clinical Trials Unit. We have an ethos of collaborative and interdisciplinary research - with many individuals contributing to projects and programmes across our centres and beyond.

We draw together researchers, clinicians and practitioners from public health, primary care, biomedical and social sciences - with roots going back to the first Chair of Public Health in the UK, established in 1898.

We focus on the interdisciplinary study of designing, developing and using information technology solutions in healthcare.

We work to improve the quality of and access to health globally. We do this through improving understanding, innovating and sharing knowledge in global health.

We scrutinise the complex social, cultural and technological landscape that characterises contemporary biomedicine and health care.

We develop, design and deliver world-class clinical trials.

Many of the studies at the Usher Institute involve members of the public. Find out how you may be able to take part.
