Objectives

  • To gain an in-depth knowledge of the principles of epidemiology, including study design and analysis.
  • To understand the statistical concepts inherent in epidemiological research.
  • To develop skills in critical appraisal of published research, presentation of original findings, writing scientific papers, computing and data management.
  • To apply this theoretical knowledge in the conduct of an original epidemiological project.

Programme structure

Student learning is achieved by

  • undertaking three compulsory taught courses in epidemiology and statistics (on the Master of Public Health programme) and a choice of three elective taught courses
  • producing a substantial research dissertation (consisting of a critical literature review and an original epidemiological project). The topic of the dissertation is self-selected which, together with the range of optional courses, means that students can 'individualise' the programme according to their own interests.
