Bowel Cancer Screening Stratified by Risk

Bowel Star UK logo

Summary

Screening for bowel cancer using FIT (Faecal Immunochemical Test) has been successful in saving lives in the UK – but it could save more lives by making better use of the test.

There are moves towards ‘risk-based screening’; this can increase the identification through screening of those who are most likely to be at high risk of bowel cancer. So instead of the FIT producing a ‘yes-no’ answer, the study will use its whole range of values in deciding what further tests (if any) are needed.

The study will examine other factors risk factors and see how they might lead to further improvements in screening performance and patient outcomes. The acceptability of these approaches to the UK general public will be explored. The impact on the running of the

NHS screening programmes will be measured – how much these alternative approaches might cost, and impact on health inequalities.
