TCCP Webinar - Estimating the extent of illicit tobacco trade Title Estimating the extent of illicit tobacco trade in Bangladesh, Ghana, and Pakistan: preliminary findings and methodological reflections Summary Please join us for the second seminar in the Tobacco Control Capacity Programme seminar series, focusing on illicit tobacco trade. One of the most effective tobacco control policies is to increase tobacco taxation. However, a consistent argument put forward by the Tobacco Industry is that this will drive up consumption and trade of illicit tobacco. Estimates of the true extent of illicit tobacco trade vary and are often overinflated by the industry. Governments require independent and valid estimates of the extent of illicit cigarette trade to implement effective tobacco control. This seminar will present preliminarily findings from recent empirical research to further our understanding of the extent of illicit tobacco trade in Bangladesh, Ghana, and Pakistan. Conducting research in this area is complex and a range of novel methods were used in these studies. We will reflect on the lessons learned from these studies to inform future work in this area. Speakers S M Abdullah, Research Fellow (Honorary) with the ARK Foundation, Bangladesh, will present: 'Estimating the magnitude of Illicit Cigarette sold as retail in Bangladesh: Findings from Retail Pack Survey' Dr. Arti Singh, Senior Lecturer and Public Health Physician, with the School of Public Health, KNUST, Kumasi, Ghana will present: 'Findings from retailer survey and stakeholder interviews on the nature and estimate extent of illicit tobacco trade in Ghana'.
