Usher/RESPIRE seminar: NIHR-RESPIRE and the FRESH AIR study

Usher Institute / NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Respiratory Health (RESPIRE) seminar

Chair: Professor Hilary Pinnock

We are delighted to have two speakers for this seminar, Dhiraj Agarwal from RESPIRE and Evelyn Brakema from the FRESH AIR study.

Dhiraj Agarwal

Development of spirometry predictive values for Western Indian population - NIHR-RESPIRE Study

Spirometry is the gold standard for accurate and repeatable measurement of lung function. Interpretation of spirometry involves looking at lung function parameters in comparison with predicted values to determine the presence and severity of disease. The ERS Global Lung Function Initiative derived reference equations for healthy individuals aged 3–95 years based principally on Caucasian, African-American, and North Asian and South China/Thailand/Taiwan populations. India is highlighted as a ‘particular’ group’ in whom further data is needed. Reliance on values derived from non-Indian populations may lead to under or over diagnosis of disease. To overcome this, there is a need to develop predictive values specific to ethnic groups within the Indian population. We will use previously-collected spirometry data from 2,500 adults aged 18 years and above from Vadu Health and Demographic Surveillance System population to develop the predictive values for the Western Indian population.

Evelyn Brakema

Targeting chronic respiratory disease in low-resource settings - the FRESH AIR study

Evelyn will share successes and pitfalls encountered during the 3-year course of the international FRESH AIR research project. She will take you through highlights of several FRESH AIR research-areas, ranging from household air pollution to implementation. She will touch upon the overlap with climate change, and is open to hear on ideas of what should be the next steps!

The session will be live streamed, with a recording made available after the seminar.

Please register if you have a University of Edinburgh EASE login, and wish to receive the live stream link, which will be circulated on the day of the seminar.

Lunch not provided.

Taxis are available from NINE BioQuarter to Teviot.

Please register via Eventbrite.

Speaker bios:

Dhiraj Agarwal Dhiraj Agarwal from KEM Hospital Research Centre, Pune, India (KEMHRC). I have pursued my post-graduation in Health Science in 2007. Completed PhD in Health Science in 2018 from Savitribai Phule Pune University, India. At KEMHRC, involved in human health research ranging from the laboratory, clinic to community-based research. The studies include a range of intervention studies including the vaccine trials, demographic and epidemiological surveys, clinical research, operations research and social science research all focusing on the betterment of human health. Recently, working as a principal project coordinator for 4CCORD multi country study of NIHR-RESPIRE which aimed to study the prevalence of CRDs across four LMICs and also initiated a small project of NIHR-RESPIRE which involves analysis of spirometry data for development of spirometry predictive values for western Indian population.

Evelyn Brakema Evelyn Brakema’s fascination with Global Health currently translates into a PhD-trajectory within the Horizon 2020 `FRESH AIR project` (Leiden University Medical Center). FRESH AIR targets chronic respiratory disease in low-resource settings in Uganda, Vietnam, Greece and Kyrgyzstan. Evelyn studies the epidemiology, health beliefs & behaviours, implementation, and health economics. She furthermore coordinated the Global Health half minor ‘Cuba’ (LUMC; 2017 & 2018) and worked as a MD in a Greek refugee camp (winter 2017). She believes climate change is among the biggest threats to health (and in general) globally, and therefore recently initiated her department’s Greenteam. As soon as the Global Health and Climate are secured, Evelyn will retire.
