Expand allCollapse allSocial areasCaféThe café, operated by the University's Estates and Accommodation, Catering, and Events service (ACE), known as the Usher 1898 Café, is located on the ground floor and is open to the public. It commemorates the establishment of the first chair of public health in the UK, the Bruce and John Usher Chair of Public Health, in 1898.Read more about the Winning Name for Usher Building CaféView the café menu and order online Village GreensEach upper floor has a number of spaces that include kitchen facilities and seating areas where teams and neighbourhoods can collaborate with each other in a more relaxed social setting.Winter GardensThe first floor and second floors each have an indoor winter garden. Double storey in height, these spaces are bright and airy with windows from floor to ceiling. They create a relaxing atmosphere for more contemplative moments or a chance for colleagues to be more physically active. They have been designed to encourage building users to step away from their desks - without having to travel far.Reflective spacesCellular spacesCellular rooms within neighbourhoods provide flexible space for those based in each neighbourhood to use as desired. They include a range of sizes suited to different uses, with flexibility for each neighbourhood to define how they are managed. One of these rooms in each of the larger neighbourhoods has frosted glass to provide privacy, for example for reflection.Core meeting, teaching and events spacesMeeting roomsThere are a number of core meeting rooms available to everyone which can be booked centrally:Four 12-person meeting rooms (ground, first, second and third floors)Two 6-person meeting rooms (ground floor)One 22-person seminar room (ground floor)One 36-person outreach room (ground floor)One 26-person meeting room (second floor)One 24-person meeting room (third floor)Non-bookable meeting boothsIn addition to the informal seating in each kitchen area, meeting booths that do not need to be booked are provided on the ground floor, making use of the space under the stairs.Usher EnlightenA large flat floor teaching and events space with the capacity to hold a maximum audience of 144 people is situated on the ground floor. This space can also be divided to create two rooms (Usher Enlighten One holding 84 people and Usher Enlighten Two holding 60 people). Image Architect's concept image of ground floor café area The Usher Foyer, outside Usher Enlighten, can be reserved for catering / registration etc. either independently or for events being held in Usher Enlighten. Usher Connect, our collaborative presentation space between the Usher Foyer and the Usher 1898 cafe on the ground floor, with a large video wall and bleacher seating, can be used for short open presentations or informal meetings.Usher InnovateUsher Innovate is our seminar room situated on the ground floor and has the capacity to hold 22 people in its standard U-shared board room set up.Usher EngageUsher Engage is our outreach room and can hold up to 36 people cabaret style - with six round tables of six. It is designed with outreach in mind, and includes cubbyholes for visitors to store any backpacks etc. enabling more space for engagement.Usher InspireNeighbourhood O on Floor 3 has been converted to a workshop/teaching/events space. It seats 48 around flexible hexagonal tables, has a projector and four screens on trolleys which act as repeater screens showing the main presentation content, or can be used independently for group work.It has a dedicated catering space within the room, and two small 6-person breakout rooms - each with a wall-mounted screen. It does have a ceiling microphone and camera, but is currently best suited for in person events.University and partner neighbourhoodsNeighbourhoodsEach of the upper floors have six secure neighbourhoods (accessed by swipe-cards) designed away from the stairwells for acoustic protection and situated to the outer edges of the building beside opening windows providing natural light and fresh air ventilation. Some are occupied by Usher staff and students, others by carefully chosen partners. Colleagues within each neighbourhood have the autonomy and control over the management and use of their space, including cellular spaces.Cellular spacesThere are 60 cellular rooms across the neighbourhoods, providing flexible space for those based in each neighbourhood to use as desired. They include a range of sizes suited to different uses, with flexibility for each neighbourhood to define how they are managed.Key facilitiesCycle parkingThere are 45 cycle spaces provided securely inside the building and includes an accessible bike parking space. Further secure cycle storage is anticipated in the vicinity of the building.ShowersThere are six showers, including one accessible and one ambulant shower.Drying areasA drying area for wet clothes is situated directly beside the showering facilities.LockersSecure lockers are conveniently provided near the shower and drying areas. Lockers are also available in each neighbourhood.Water filling stationSituated on the ground floor, a dedicated water filling station is available to refill water bottles etc. Caring roomA caring room is situated on the ground floor, providing a private space with comfortable seating and facilities including sink, fridge and microwave.ToiletsThere are 69 toilets in total across the building, including 12 accessible toilets and eight ambulant toilets and one Changing Places toilet in development. Changing Places are fully accessible toilets designed so that they provide sufficient space and equipment for people who are not able to use the toilet independently.More information is available at Changing Places Toilets (changing-places.org)Freezers, archive room and photovoltaic panelsThere is a restricted access archive space and freezer room on the roof of the building, alongside photovoltaic panels for renewable energy generation and other building plant.Video recording boothThe third floor has a dedicated video recording booth to support the promotion and sharing of research and innovation and creation of teaching content.Floor plans Booking core meeting / event spacesUsher Building core meeting / event spaces are bookable for University of Edinburgh business, free of charge, during building opening hours.
