Meet the Neighbours The second floor, Building Nine, is a hub for activity centred on working with big data - with various groups, teams and centres based here from within the University of Edinburgh and beyond. There are links with work across the Usher Institute, but particularly with the Centre for Medical Informatics. The following is a summary of key groups located in Building Nine - but if you are interested in finding out more, pop out and visit! ADRC-S, ADRN The Administrative Data Research Centre for Scotland is led by the University of Edinburgh and brings together major Scottish research centres. The centre involves world leading experts in the theory, methods and policy of linking records for secondary uses. The Administrative Data Research Network helps researchers gain access to de-identified administrative data so they can carry out social and economic research − research that has the potential to benefit society. ADRC-S website ADRN website Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research The Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research is a collaboration between Asthma UK, leading asthma researchers from universities across the UK, people affected by asthma, NHS partners and other organisations looking to improve the lives of people affected by Asthma. It is directed by Professor Aziz Sheikh at the University of Edinburgh, and Professor Chris Griffiths at Queen Mary University of London. Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research website CPHS, CMI and CGHR The Usher Institute contains three core centres; the Centre for Population Health Sciences, the Centre for Medical Informatics and the Centre for Global Health Research. The Usher Institute is split across multiple sites, including Bioquarter and the Old Medical School at Teviot Place. DHI The Digital Health & Care Institute brings together people and organisations in the health and social care, charity, technology, design and academic sectors to develop new ideas for digital technology and information services that will improve the delivery of health and care services for Scotland’s communities. Digital Health & Care Institute website Edinburgh Data Science Edinburgh Data Science has initiated and leads working groups in key areas (Research, Education, Innovation, Architecture, and Policy) to consolidate and amplify the data science activity taking place across the University of Edinburgh. Members contribute to the strategic focus of each group and consist of academics and senior support staff from all areas of the University, including Science & Engineering, Humanities & Social Sciences, and Medicine & Veterinary Medicine. It has recently launched a unique cross-University modular online distance learning postgraduate programme. Edinburgh Data Science website eDRIS The electronic Data Research & Innovation Service, part of National Services Scotland (NHS), provides a single point of contact to assist in the completion of applications to the Public Benefit and Privacy Panel and assist researchers in study design, approvals and data access in a secure environment. eDRIS aims to make conducting research easier, more efficient and more convenient. Information about eDRIS on the ISD Scotland website Farr Institute The Farr Institute is a UK-wide research collaboration involving 21 academic institutions and health partners in England, Scotland and Wales. Publically funded by a consortium of ten organisations led by the Medical Research Council, the Institute is committed to delivering high-quality, cutting-edge research using ‘big data’ to advance the health and care of patients and the public. The Farr Institute does not own or control data but analyses data to better understand the health of patients and populations. Farr Institute website Farr Institute @ Scotland The Farr Institute @ Scotland is a collaboration between six Scottish Universities and NHS National Services Scotland. The aim is to both improve the health of the Scottish population and place Scotland as a global leader in health informatics research. It is one of the four original centres making up the UK-wide Farr Institute. IHDP The Innovative Healthcare Delivery Programme seeks to fundamentally change the way data and analytics are used to drive improvement in health outcomes, by fostering new relationships between the NHS, industry and the academic and third sectors. Telescot is a collaboration between a number of public, private and voluntary sector organisations supporting the development of innovative healthcare in Scotland, and sits within the Usher Institute.
