Shirley-Anne Somerville MSP met researchers to hear first-hand about the work that is being undertaken through collaborative partnerships across the EU and beyond.

Pioneering research

Ms Somerville was introduced to academics leading in the fields of medical informatics and health promotion at the Usher Institute.

She was given an insight into a range of projects that have benefitted from EU partnerships and grants.

Initiatives included a Horizon 2020-funded study into youth smoking prevention led by Professor Amanda Amos.

Professors Harry Campbell and Igor Rudan also highlighted international initiatives pioneered by the Centre for Global Health Research.

Our world leading universities are home to some of the most advanced research facilities and over the years have attracted the brightest and best researchers from across the EU and beyond. These talented individuals have played a key part in ground breaking innovative research in our institutions which has had a vital and positive impact in many areas of modern life, including science, technology and engineering.

The visit coincided with a joint statement released by Universities Scotland and the Scottish Government.

During the visit, the Scottish Government produced a short film which they have released on their YouTube channel.
