The Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research has been re-funded for a further five years, with an additional £2 million committed by Asthma UK. Zero tolerance of asthma attacks The news was announced by Centre Co-Directors, Professors Aziz Sheikh and Chris Griffiths (QMUL), at the Annual Scientific Meeting in London. We are exceptionally grateful to Asthma UK for this further support. We look forward to working together as a network to build on our achievements over the past five years and create lasting impact for people with asthma throughout the UK and beyond. As we move into this new phase of the Centre we will focus our activities around an overarching principle, as recommended by The Lancet Commission on Asthma, of 'Zero tolerance of asthma attacks'. The Universities of Leeds, Oxford and Southampton will formally join the network as part of the renewal. Since its launch in 2014, the Centre has been at the forefront of research making a real difference to the lives of those affected by asthma – contributing to important advances in topics such as air pollution, Vitamin D supplementation and the effectiveness of the flu vaccine in asthma. Capacity for the future A key focus for the next five years will be growing the Centre’s postgraduate training programme, with new PhD studentships and post-doctoral positions to be announced in the coming months.
