Celebrating development

It was with pleasure that we welcomed guests, including from the Scottish Government, NHS, supporters and colleagues, to a networking event on 22 March to celebrate the development of the new Usher building, currently under construction at Edinburgh BioQuarter, and our vision for future innovation within health and social care.

The event was opened by The University of Edinburgh Principal, Professor Sir Peter Mathieson, and included an opportunity for visitors to take part in a tour of the new building as well an exhibition celebrating the new Usher building and what it means for the future of health and care across the region and beyond.

We are grateful to colleagues in the Institute of Regeneration and Repair who welcomed us to their new building, hosting our exhibition.

Data at the heart

Putting data at the centre of responses to health and social care system challenges is crucial to improving services through research, innovation and planning. The exhibition focused on projects and activity, led by those at the Usher Institute, which aim to drive advances in health and social care through the application of data science. This included an insight into our world-leading research on COVID-19 and a showcase of the DataLoch service developed in partnership with NHS Lothian.

The new Usher building

Due to open in 2024, the new Usher building will co-locate the Usher Institute at the University of Edinburgh with a community of partners from the public, private and third sectors - including small and medium-sized enterprises and health and care providers - working on the shared purpose of developing data-enabled solutions to benefit health and wellbeing.

The project is a key component of the Data-Driven Innovation initiative, a major part of the Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal, and is funded by a collaboration between the UK Government, Scottish Government and the University of Edinburgh.
