Jaime Garcia Iglesias, Chancellor's Fellow at Usher's Centre for Biomedicine, Self and Society, has been appointed as a Trustee of Waverley Care, Scotland's leading HIV and hepatitis C charity. Waverley Care has supported people living with or affected by HIV and hepatitis C for more than 35 years. The charity works to reduce health inequalities, challenge stigma, influence policy, and provide high-quality support and advocacy, with the ambition of achieving zero new HIV transmissions in Scotland by 2030.As a member of the Board of Trustees, Jaime will help provide strategic oversight and governance for the charity, drawing on his expertise in sociology, public health and community engagement. His research focuses on HIV, sexual health, infectious disease, stigma, and the role of communities in shaping effective public health responses. Through his work, he has collaborated with community organisations, public health agencies and policymakers in the UK and internationally to improve health outcomes and strengthen community-academic partnerships. I’m honoured to join such a fantastic organisation that has been leading the way in HIV and hepatitis C prevention and to work alongside such an inspiring group of trustees. Throughout my career, I’ve worked at the intersection of research, public health and community engagement, and I’m excited to bring that experience to the Board. We are at an important turning point for HIV, both in the UK and globally, and I believe thoughtful, reflective leadership will be essential as the landscape evolves. I’m particularly looking forward to helping ensure that community voices remain at the centre of research, policy and practice.
