Professor Melita Gordon elected as Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. Professor Melita Gordon has been elected as a Fellow of The Academy of Medical Sciences. This prestigious honour recognises her outstanding contributions to global health research, particularly in the prevention and treatment of invasive Salmonella infections in sub-Saharan Africa.Professor Gordon, based at the Usher Institute and also affiliated with the University of Liverpool and the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Programme, has worked in Malawi since 1997. Her pioneering research has led to the development and implementation of vaccines that have saved countless lives. Most notably, she led a pivotal clinical trial demonstrating the safety and efficacy of Typhoid Conjugate Vaccines, which informed one of Malawi’s largest immunisation campaigns - reaching over seven million children in 2023. I am looking forward to expanding the scope and impact of this research, from both collaborating with other Academy Fellows and engaging with the public to increase awareness and understanding of how vaccines can improve health globally.
