Scoping Review: Policies and programs to address asthma and COPD in the context of climate change

This project is based at AKU in Bangladesh.

Overview

Project title: Policies and programs in South Asia to address Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in context of climate change – A scoping review

Programme: Climate & Health

Based at: The Aga Khan University, Bangladesh

Start date: 01 April 2024

End date:

Principal investigator: Sajid Soofi

Background

Bangladesh has been ranked as the seventh most climate-vulnerable country in the world. Significant risks are associated with climate change, especially asthma, rhinosinusitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and respiratory tract infections.

Acute respiratory infections (ARI) are a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in children under-five, especially in low and middle-income countries. Despite this, few studies have investigated the possible association between the change in climatic conditions and childhood ARI, and thus data on the effect of variability of climate parameters on childhood ARI is scarce, particularly from low- and middle-income countries including Bangladesh.

Aim and Impact

This research project aims to investigate the association between variability of climate parameters (e.g., temperature, humidity, and rainfall) and ARI prevalence in under-five children in different regions of Bangladesh.
