Completed Projects: Infectious Diseases

Research from the first phase of RESPIRE (2016-2021) related to acute respiratory disorders.

This programme of work focused on acute lower respiratory tract infections (such as pneumonia) as well as project launched in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Led by: Samir Saha, Child Health Research Foundation, and Harish Nair, University of Edinburgh

RESPIRE projects in this area focus on four key areas

  1. The adaptation and tailoring of existing interventions, which can be incorporated into existing health care systems in each country. This also involves assessing the ability of such interventions to be delivered at a larger scale.
  2. To enrich and/or develop new cohorts of lower respiratory tract infections that will provide platforms for future clinical trials.
  3. Developing new interventions through small scale projects, to serve as proofs of concept for larger scale trials.
  4. Conducting multi-country trials to inform the development of new patient management guidelines, feeding into the evidence base for the World Health Organization (WHO).
