2024 Festive Calendar | Day 01

Moving in to the Usher Building

One of our most exciting achievements of 2024 has been our move into the remarkable Usher Building at the Edinburgh BioQuarter. Completed this year, with a formal opening set for early 2025, this facility is far more than a new address - it’s a vibrant, collaborative environment that already unites the Usher Institute, the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine Office, and the Academic and Clinical Central Office for Research and Development (ACCORD) and will welcome in new partners very soon. This move represents a major step forward in our work and vision to create impactful, data-enabled health solutions.

Designed by Hassell and built by principal contractor McLaughlin & Harvey, the Usher Building showcases cutting-edge innovation - with awards already received, including the prestigious Gold National Site Award for ‘considerate construction’ for the team in 2023. Funded by the Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal alongside The University of Edinburgh, with additional generous support from the Wolfson Foundation, the building was also featured as a Scottish Government-commissioned case study for its forward-thinking, zero-emissions heating system—a proud symbol of our commitment to sustainability.

With space design benefitting from feedback from consultation groups, the building welcomes students including on our flagship on-campus Master of Public Health programme, fosters new partnerships, and offers a flexible, engaging environment for learning, research and collaboration.
