2024 Festive Calendar | Day 08

A selection of events from Usher

This year has been a remarkable one for events at the Usher Institute, as we've had the privilege of hosting several high-profile visitors and engaging in thought-provoking discussions on topics spanning health, research and innovation. Ministerial guests have visited our new building at Edinburgh BioQuarter and we've also been pleased to host numerous conferences, seminars and online events that highlight our pioneering research and foster collaboration across disciplines.

Looking ahead to 2025, we are excited to continue building on this momentum and look forward to welcoming even more guests, collaborators, and thought leaders to our events. Whether in-person or online, our goal is to create spaces for meaningful exchanges that drive forward the research and partnerships that are shaping the future of health and innovation.

Some highlights from 2024

  • February: The Severe Mental Illness and Physical Disease seminar brought experts together to discuss the intersection of mental and physical health and explore innovative care strategies.
  • March: The Behavioural Research-UK (BR-UK) launch introduced the initiative and featured an opening address by Professor Dame Angela McLean, UK Government Chief Scientific Adviser.
  • May: The Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research held its final Annual Scientific Meeting in Reading, including recognition awards. We also welcomed Neil Gray, Scotland’s Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, who shared insights on health innovation and reform at the Usher Building.
  • June: Craig Hoy, Scotland's Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Local Government, visited to discuss Scotland's leadership in life sciences and data-led healthcare.
  • September: The Usher Building hosted an inspiring day at the BioQuarter Postdoc Symposium, kicking off National Postdoc Appreciation Week here in Usher.
  • October: Professor Chatterjee from the University of Sussex explored the role of gender-based preferences in healthcare demand during the New Frontiers in Health and Social Care event.
  • November: Barclays Eagle Labs delivered their Health Elevate Scotland event at the Usher Building, featuring panels on attracting investment and commercialising innovations in health and tech. Inaugural lectures for Professors Bruce Guthrie and Stewart Mercer were also held in the Usher Building, alongside the Advanced Care Research Centre's Images of Care exhibition, showcasing photos by older adults capturing acts of care.

The above has only scratched the surface of what we deliver, but please do follow us on LinkedIn and X, catch up with what's happening and sign up for our future events.
