Usher guest speaker: Dely Elliot Title: On bridging academic cultures: What role do I play in maximising the benefits of international education to the student community? Speaker: Dr Dely Lazarte Elliot, Senior Lecturer, School of Education, College of Social Sciences, University of Glasgow Description: "My personal journey from an international doctoral researcher to an academic has inspired my pursuit of understanding postgraduate students’ experience of academic acculturation. More than a fascinating area of study, a better understanding of this phenomenon can make a qualitative difference to the overall experience and success (or failure) of international postgraduate students. Arguably, greater insight in this area has wider implications not only for postgraduate students but also for their supervisors, the research community, the host institutions, funders, and even the sending countries. This seminar will comprise sharing my own journey and personal observations, consideration of existing research in this field as well as lessons learned from the research studies that we undertook ourselves." *Note: Although the focus is on the experience of international doctoral researchers, lessons that apply to Master’s and online students will be highlighted. Biographical details: Dely gained a BEd Hons (Cum Laude) from the University of Santo Tomas, Philippines, and an MSc in Counselling Psychology (with Distinction) from Assumption University, Thailand. In her PhD from the University of Nottingham, she investigated how university lecturers' emotional intelligence impacts on learning effectiveness - especially with respect to the hidden curriculum. Dely previously taught undergraduate students in South East Asia. She had extensive experience of undertaking research in education and educational psychology as a Research Associate prior to becoming a Lecturer. Currently, she is part of the MSc Psychological Studies programme where her teaching and dissertation supervision are mainly based.
