The Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research Patient and Public Involvement Platform has been selected by the NIHR as the first of ten test bed projects to implement the National Standards for Public Involvement in Research. Launched this week by The Public Involvement Standards Development Partnership, six national standards serve as a description of what effective public involvement in research looks like, as well as a tool for self-reflection and learning. The standards have been developed through a UK-wide partnership over the last 18 months, intended as guidelines against which improvement can be monitored across the UK. Simon Denegri, NIHR Director of Patients, Carers and The Public said: My congratulations and thanks to those organisations who will be 'test beds' for the standards over the next 12 months. They will be playing a really important role in making them roadworthy for future users. Congratulations go to the Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research PPI team, who will now work with researchers to build on current infrastructure to pilot the PPI Standards. Patient and Public Involvement Fellow Melissa Goodbourn said: People affected by asthma have played an integral part of the Centre’s work from the very beginning, and since then we’ve seen the benefits that come with collaborating with members of the public on our research. We are also aware of the challenges that still exist in embedding patient involvement as a routine part of the research process, so we are delighted to be chosen as one of NIHR test bed projects to pilot the PPI Standards and better understand how we can ensure meaningful and effective patient involvement across the Centre. The Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research will work to implement the standards in 2018/19 alongside nine other UK organisations: Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Keele University Kidney Patient Involvement Network Queen’s University Belfast University of Glasgow Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists Women’s Network Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust Wales School for Social Care Research and CADR (The Centre for Ageing and Dementia Research) More information The six national standards for public involvement in research Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research NIHR press release Publication date 21 Mar, 2018
