Usher Institute Forum success

The Forum

The Usher Forum offers a chance for all our staff and students to get together in person and hear about key updates, successes and opportunities ahead.  We hold the Forum twice a year and include a series of short presentations from new staff, major new grants, updates on our teaching and learning activities and opportunities for discussion and networking.

Highlights

It was great to hear from new staff, about new plans and initiatives and about recent successes across the Institute. This included Senior Lecturer Dr Felicity Mehendale, our new Directors of Research Dr Martyn Pickersgill and Professor Steff Lewis, updates on the Scottish Allergy and Respiratory Academy from Professor Hilary Pinnock and the Innovative Healthcare Delivery Programme from Dr Lynn Morrice.

We were delighted to welcome Julian Gitsham, from Hassell Studio - to give an update on progress on the designs for our new building, and Colan Mehaffey, COO of the Health & Social Care Data-Driven Innovation Hub.

Dr Ruth McQuillan gave an overview of some exciting new developments in our online learning programmes, and Lorna Thompson and Ross Watson gave an overview of a recent week-long public engagement event run by the Global Health Governance Programme.

We had a very engaging discussion session in breakout rooms - one for each of the 5 key themes in our Usher Institute strategy. Thanks to all for the helpful contributions here, as part of the ongoing consultation and development work, and especially the strategy theme leads - Dr Martyn Pickersgill, Dr Poonam Malik, Professor John Frank, Dr Lucy McCloughan and Dr Kathrin Cresswell - as well as Alex Peden who is coordinating the strategy development.

Brian McKinstry retirement presentation

We were sad to say goodbye to Professor Brian McKinstry - who is retiring later this summer after many years working here with us in the Usher Institute both as a researcher and a GP in our General Practice, the Mackenzie Medical Centre.  Professor David Weller, Head of Centre for Population Health Sciences and Principal GP at the Mackenzie Medical Centre presented Brian with a small gift on behalf of Usher Institute, and shared some memories from Brian's distinguished career. He remembered one of Brian's early publications, reviewing what patients felt about the clothing worn by their GP.

New look for the Usher Institute

To celebrate the Usher Institute's 4th birthday, we are delighted to be launching a new look and feel on 1 August 2019.  This will include a new logo and strapline, which we feel reflect our new vision, mission and aims. To help propel the Institute into a bright, clear future our new logo is crisp, modern, confident and welcoming.

We had a fantastic positive audience reaction when the new look Usher Institute logo was revealed in our soft launch at the Forum - and we look forward to sharing publicly with you all from 1 August.
