Professor Sir Aziz Sheikh elected to the National Academy of Medicine

Sir Aziz Sheikh OBE, Professor of Primary Care Research and Development at the Usher Institute, has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine in recognition of his exceptional contributions to health informatics, data science and primary care.

Aziz’s election to the National Academy of Medicine - one of the highest honours in the fields of health and medicine - celebrates his leadership in improving the quality, safety and efficiency of clinical care worldwide. His globally recognised expertise spans asthma care, primary care, and his pivotal role in steering Scotland’s COVID-19 response. His work continues to underscore the importance of primary care in addressing the complex and pressing health challenges faced globally.

 It is an immense honour to be elected to the National Academy of Medicine. This recognition not only reflects the collaborative efforts of my colleagues and teams but also underscores the critical importance of primary care in addressing global health challenges. As we continue to navigate complex health issues, the role of primary care in delivering efficient, effective, and equitable healthcare has never been more crucial.

Aziz joins an elite group of over 2400 distinguished National Academy of Medicine members, including nearly 200 international members, who bring together expertise across health, medicine, law, engineering, social sciences and the humanities. His induction highlights the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration to address complex issues in health and related policy.
