Thanasis Tsanas, Professor of Digital Health and Data Science at the Usher Institute, has been named one of the inaugural Founding Fellows of the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences. The new Fellowship recognises outstanding leaders across the mathematical sciences whose work demonstrates excellence, impact, and service to the community. Founding Fellows will help shape the direction of the Academy, champion the role of mathematical sciences across research, education, industry and society, and support the development of the field across the UK.Thanasis is one of five academics from The University of Edinburgh selected for the first cohort of Fellows, which was officially announced on Thursday 29 January 2026 at the Academy’s launch event at the Royal Society in London.Thanasis’s work at the Usher Institute focuses on data-driven health innovation, including the application of advanced mathematical and computational methods to improve healthcare delivery and outcomes. I am deeply honoured to be elected as a Founding Fellow of the Academy for Mathematical Sciences. Mathematics is the cornerstone of the current AI Renaissance, which is transforming the world we live in, our interactions, and the digital healthcare space. I look forward to collaborating with colleagues at the Academy to champion the vital role of mathematics in solving the world’s most complex challenges. Professor Thanasis Tsanas Usher Institute I’m delighted to welcome our inaugural Fellows — individuals of exceptional distinction who collectively advance the mathematical sciences through discovery, leadership, education and real-world application. As Fellows of the Academy, they will come together in service of the wider public good: bringing independent expertise to bear on national priorities, championing excellence in mathematics education, strengthening the UK’s research and innovation base, and helping to ensure that mathematics continues to deliver opportunity, resilience and prosperity across our four nations.
