There are many seminars and events taking place that are organised or hosted by, or likely to be of interest to, Usher Institute staff and students.

Centre and Research Group seminars

Many research groups hold regular meetings and informal seminars through the year.  A selection of these are listed below:

​​​​Centre for Medical Informatics

The Centre for Medical Informatics meet weekly for face-to-face seminars. Presentations will include a mix of external speakers and research presentations from across the Centre and Usher, including presentations from PhD students and early career researchers. The seminars take place at the Usher Building every Wednesday lunchtime from 12.45-13.45. Lunch is served at 12.45 and the seminar will start at 13.00.

Calendar invites are sent to the Centre for Medical Informatics mailing list. If you wish to attend and have lunch, please accept this invite. For anyone who does not receive these invites but would like to attend and have lunch, please email Linda Tait (l.tait@ed.ac.uk).

Centre for Global Health

The Centre for Global Health meet every second and fourth Wednesday of each month during University term time - alternating between an all staff/student open meeting and staff/student presentations. They meet in the Usher Building, with the option to join remotely.

Methodological groups

Qualitative Researchers in Health

A friendly, informal group designed for mutual support, interest and information exchange.  This discussion group of researchers from Usher and beyond who employ qualitative methods includes informal sessions on qualitative methods, analysis, writing, and ethical dilemmas by drawing on the experiences of individual members and external speakers. Anyone with an interest in qualitative research is welcome to join the group and can contact one of the convenors (Neneh.Rowa-Dewar@ed.ac.uk , Debbie.cavers@ed.ac.uk , ruth.hart@ed.ac.uk) to be added to the mailing list.

Social Science of Health and Biomedicine Group

The Social Science group within the Usher Institute is a supportive group of researchers from across the social science disciplines. We conduct cutting-edge research in our ‘home’ disciplines, but also contribute to and lead interdisciplinary projects with colleagues across the Usher Institute, and beyond. We meet weekly for most of the year, currently on Tuesday lunchtimes, for friendly, informal seminars on topics of shared interest. Molecular Epidemiology Group

A group of epidemiologists, geneticists, statisticians and public health specialists interested in exchange of knowledge and ideas, collaboration within and outside the group and interdisciplinary approaches to discovery of factors contributing to aetiology and pathogenesis of complex diseases in humans.
